There’s a very real, honest phase at the beginning of a boudoir photoshoot that no one really talks about:
It can feel a little awkward.
And that is completely normal (and okay!)!
In the first 10 minutes, almost every single boudoir client is a little nervous. You’ve just arrived, you’re in a new space, and you’re about to do something that’s probably outside your comfort zone. Of course it feels that way.
I often hear things like:
“I’m so nervous”
“I don’t know what I’m doing”
“I’m going to be awkward”
And my answer is always the same: you’re allowed to be!
Yes, It Might Feel Awkward at First
No one walks into a boudoir session instantly confident and camera-ready. That’s not how this works.
You’re not expected to know how to pose. You’re not expected to feel completely relaxed right away. That first little bit of awkwardness? It’s just part of getting into something new.
We Take Our Time (On Purpose!)
This is exactly why I don’t do rushed sessions at my San Diego boudoir studio.
You have a full day in the studio, not a quick 30-minute time slot where you’re expected to figure it all out immediately.
We ease into it. We start with simple posing, in an outfit that feels comfortable to you. Nothing complicated, nothing overwhelming. I guide you through everything so you’re never guessing what to do with your hands or your body.
Taking really good photos takes time. It takes a minute to settle in, to relax, to stop overthinking every little thing. And that’s built into your experience!
The Moment It Clicks
There is always a turning point. Usually, it’s when I turn the camera around and show you your first few images.
You see yourself and you’re like… wait, that’s me?!
That moment shifts everything. You realize you don’t need to “be good at photos.” You already look incredible. You just needed someone to guide you and show you what’s actually there.
And if you don’t love something, that’s okay too! We adjust. We tweak posing, angles, expression, outfits. That’s what I’m here for. It’s a collaboration, and we keep refining until it feels like you.
Music, Movement, and Finding Your Rhythm
We don’t stay in that awkward phase for long.
We put on music you love. We keep things moving. We adjust, laugh, reset, try again.
And then suddenly, you’re not overthinking anymore. Your body starts to relax, your movements feel natural. By your second or third look, it feels completely different. You’re more confident, more comfortable, and having fun!
This Is Why the Experience Matters
That shift doesn’t just happen randomly. It’s because your entire session is designed to support you.
Before your session, we do a planning call on video so you feel fully prepared. You’ll have guidance on outfits, styling, and the overall vibe you want.
When you arrive, you’re taken care of. Professional hair and makeup, access to the studio wardrobe, time to settle in and get comfortable.
During your session, we shoot multiple looks so you can explore different styles and sides of yourself.
And at the end of the day, you see your images right away with a same-day reveal. No waiting around wondering how they turned out.
Everything is personalized. Everything is intentional.
You Don’t Have to Feel Ready
If you’re worried about being awkward at first, you’re not alone. If you’re worried about feeling uncomfortable, that’s normal too.
But what I see in the first 10 minutes is never the final version of you in your session. It’s just the starting point.
The real magic is how quickly that shifts once you realize… you’ve got this!
